Zen Bathworks in Haines, Alaska has a  Lead Hot Tub Line Woodworker position open and is looking for an individual to join our 9 person strong team and growing team. An original equipment manufacturer of luxury wooden soaking bathtubs and wooden coopered hot tubs, in business for over 28 years, we are located at 832 Spruce Grove Rd Haines, AK 99827. We are an OEM and online retailer. We are also an authorized online dealer of designer faucets, high quality showers, other bathroom fixtures. We serve customers throughout the United States and Canada primarily, with a growing international presence.

Our ideal candidate for this role has prior experience in woodworking, other relevant types of manufacturing, constructions, or other trades work, including supervisory and/or management inclusive roles. Fine woodworking experience is a plus, but not mandatory. Well qualified applicants will be good critical thinkers, self motivators, team players, have an eye for detail, and be able to simultaneously satisfy both high quality and high productivity demands.

PLEASE NOTE: While some flexibility in work schedule is a high possibility after training, this position  requires permanent residence in the 99827 Haines Borough, Alaska area . This is a small, remote town in south east Alaska. It is a one-of-a-kind place to live. Note that relocation assistance is not offered with this position.  If you don't have permanent residence established here, it is required that you add a cover letter explaining your plans to move here. It's a beautiful, wonderful place to live, but it is very unique. You would need to demonstrate that you know what you'd be getting into, in order for us to seriously consider our application. If you like an outdoor paradise and a small town in picturesque setting, then Haines is a place for you. If you need a Wal Mart and a McDonalds (for example), it is not.

What does it take?

• Experience working with your hands is required.
• Work full-time as part of a 3 - 5 person production team hand-crafting wooden soaking bathtubs and wooden coopered hot tubs
• Woodworking experience is preferred; Fine woodworking (e.g. cabinet building, boat building) is a plus.
• A good attitude and dependable personality with a high ability to learn and adapt.
• Ability to train and supervise colleagues.
• Ability to manage stock levels of semi-finished materials.
• Strength and fitness levels to be able to be on your feet lifting and moving things and to have a steady hand.
• Experience supervising, training, and guiding colleagues in manufacturing and/or construction tasks.
• Good math and measuring skills.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• A friendly, easy-going, and empathetic personality.
• A passion for craftsmanship.
• Ability to work unsupervised on your own tasks while simultaneously guiding and directing an assistant to the end of keeping production on schedule.
• Ability to aid in maintaining and developing a positive and efficient working environment.
• Ability to aid in developing and maintaining a lean mfg. based continuous improvement work place.

Mandatory Qualifications

• Experience crafting, building, working with your hands, etc. In wood is preferred, but with other materials will also be considered.
• Ability to work on your feet and with your hands
• Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
• High attention to detail
• A life-long learner outlook and attitude
• Ability to maintain consistent respectful and constructive behavior in relationships with co-workers

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in fine woodworking (e.g. cabinet building, wooden boat building).
• Experience in a production manufacturing environment.

Job Expectations Detail:

Learn, execute, teach, inspect, and supervise production steps for Cedar Hot Tubs

Use woodworking equipment correctly and safely e.g. bandsaws, table saws, miter saws, drill press, sanders, molder, shaper, vacuum press, etc.

Optimize material use

Meet production schedule deadlines

Work efficiently in a streamlined manner to optimize usage of time

Maintain Quality

Select around defects – weather checks, splits, knots, grain issues

Make accurate measurements and cuts

Properly mix and apply epoxy

Finely finish wooden surfaces through proper sanding, oiling, and waxing

Suggest changes for quality improvement when possible

Exhibit sound shop habits

Execute proper tool selection

Help maintain tools and sharpening schedule

Organize tools and accessories

Exhibit safe work habits

Assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and clean production wood shop.

Receiving

Aid in the receiving process of supply deliveries

Shipping

Aid with the careful packaging and crating of finished products for safe transport

Help minimize shipping weight – and maximize protection

Operate forklift safely and effectively

Inventory

Aid with month-end inventory physical counts of supplies and materials on hand

Summary:

As you can see, this is engaging and fulfilling position in an environment for anyone who is a craftsman. Training will be provided for the specifics of our products and our shop. Starting pay DOE (depends on experience). Woodworking experience is preferred, but experience with other materials and types of product manufacturing, if relevant, will also be considered.
