Job Description

Heritage Golf Group is the fastest growing owner and operator of private golf and country clubs and high end daily fee clubs in the United States. Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, Heritage has grown from six properties in 2019, to 43 locations across the United States. Our mission is to be the leading platform of family-oriented golf/country clubs and premium semi-private/resort courses in the industry.

Due to our growth, we are seeking an experienced and business-minded Senior Counsel to join our legal team at our corporate headquarters in Herndon, VA. This position will support the legal needs of our portfolio of golf clubs across the country, working closely with general managers, the senior executive team, and outside counsel. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with broad-based experience in corporate, licensing, real estate, and general business law.

While it is preferred that this position be based in corporate headquarters in Herndon, VA, we are open to remote qualified candidates in key markets such as Denver CO, Tampa FL, Savannah GA, or St. Louis MO.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day legal support to the company’s golf clubs and corporate office, with a focus on general corporate, licensing, and compliance matters.
  • Interface directly with general managers and operational leaders at golf clubs to provide practical legal guidance and ensure compliance with company policies and applicable laws.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including vendor agreements, service contracts, lease agreements, and club-related operational agreements.
  • Review and analyze real estate and title exception documents, including HOA declarations, Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&Rs), and other encumbrances relevant to golf club operations. Directly interface with HOA’s related to ongoing issues.
  • Respond to litigation demand letters and coordinate with outside counsel as needed on pre-litigation and dispute resolution matters.
  • Oversee and monitor the company’s obligations related to membership deposit liabilities and assist in managing related risks and member communications.
  • Support the permitting and licensing process for golf club operations, including alcohol licenses, health permits, and other state and local regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a legal resource for the general counsel and corporate team, providing advice on strategic initiatives and supporting ongoing business development and operational projects.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar; Virginia bar admission preferred or willingness to obtain corporate counsel registration in Virginia.
  • 3–6 years of legal experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department, preferably with a focus on real estate, general corporate, or hospitality/golf industry matters.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to golf clubs and company events.

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior experience working in the hospitality, leisure, or real estate industry.
  • Familiarity with membership structures, deposit obligations, or club operations.
  • Exposure to permitting and licensing at the state and local level.
  • AI & Technology Fluency
  • Familiarity with AI language models (e.g., ChatGPT, Co-Pilot, Gemini) and how they function
  • Experience using AI tools for legal research, brief generation, discovery, or contract review
  • Knowledge of legal tech platforms (e.g., Westlaw Edge, Lexis+, Casetext, Kira, Ironclad, etc.)
  • Understanding of limitations and risks of generative AI in legal contexts (e.g., hallucination, data privacy)
  • Certification or training in legal tech, AI, or machine learning fundamentals
